In honor of International Women’s Day (March 8!) and Women’s History Month, we are talking protest songs! When words and feelings fail us, music comes to the rescue to help us shout, plead, or sometimes even ask nicely for the change we want to see in the world.
Christine’s pick was the melodically pleasing hit “Big Yellow Taxi” from the lady of the canyon herself, Joni Mitchell.
A true advocate, she continues to support and speak on behalf of those less fortunate, and she’s currently raising funds for those affected by the Los Angeles area wildfires.
Don’t forget to check out the Big Yellow Taxi Animation from the Sonny & Cher Show (1971) and of course the 50 Worst Songs of the ’00s, (but hey, who are we to judge?!).
Christina selected the tongue in cheek “Make America Great Again” by Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot.
Though released in 2016, the sentiments of defying a wicked leader are still valid… maybe even more so now.
Christina was thrilled when members of Pussy Riot visited her home state of Texas to demand abortion rights.
And if you wanna be a modern day fan girl/groupie/Band Aid/etc., check out KCRW’s Lost Notes: Groupies. We loved it!!!!!!!!!!
Even though March is Women’s History Month, we urge you to celebrate a woman today, tomorrow, and every day!
