first radio request

“Hello? You’re on the air!”

Maybe in our fantasies. But then again, in our fantasies aren’t we the DJs? Yes.

This week Christina’s theme pick was “the first song you called into request on the radio.” She recalls fondly the summer she and her friend called into KLSU to request “B.O.B” (Bombs Over Baghdad) by Outkast from their album Stankonia (2000). It’s interesting to think that radio stations were banning B.O.B. for its “bomb” lyrics (see what I did there?) before the censors decided to ban 164 songs after 9/11 (some with very questionable reasons… “Walk Like an Egyptian,” really?).

Christine’s radio request pick was an ode to her first crush–Eddie Murphy. His non-comedic pop hit “Party All the Time” may have made Rick Dees laugh when Christine called in her “Potty” all the time request. Or maybe it was a fever dream. All we know is Rick James’s blonde locks knocked our socks off.

And while this episode is being released on our least favorite holiday (no foolin’), you should mark your calendar to support KXLU, one of our favorite college radio stations, during their annual Fundrazor (April 4-12).

College radio forever!!!!!

(Bonus pic of Christina joining forces with some fellow DJs from UT Austin, Rice, and elsewhere in the KVRX studio circa 2009).
