Who gets to decide if an instrument is unique? This week, Christina and Christine do (I guess).
Drums, guitar, bass. Maybe you hear these every time you click on the radio. What we want to know is… what’s your favorite song featuring a less than common instrument? For Christina, she thought of Austin band The Octopus Project, specifically their song “I Saw the Bright Shinies” as a great example of a song featuring a unique instrument–the theremin.
Not only was this instrument potentially the inspiration for the synthesizer, it was used to contact extraterrestrials. Unique enough for you?
Christine’s pick is the harmonium, also known as a “reed organ” or “pump organ.” Used frequently in classical, religious, and Southeast Asian music, the harmonium also caught the ears of the Beatles, who used this unique instrument in their song, “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”
Perhaps the “harmony” in harmonium could inspire people to engage in Christine’s International sing and dance along idea. Even if the song is 4:33 of silence.
