Moving your body from the bar to the dance floor is easier said than done. But every once in a while, a song cuts through the noise, overrules your hyper self-awareness, and pulls you into the crowd. This week on Stereothematica, we celebrate those songs. The ones that get us up and moving before we even know what’s happening.
One of those undeniable dance floor hits for Christine and Christina was Deee-Lite’s 1990 classic “Groove is in the Heart.” But that was neither of their picks today, because One Song’s episode on this banger was just too perfect. If you want a wildly insightful dive into what makes that track tick, check out their podcast. It’s a love letter to the beat, the bassline, and that unforgettable groove. Sing it, baby!
After going down the My Brilliant Friend rabbit hole, Christine finally shared her pick, that she learned from the HBO show (season 3, episode 5), Raffaella Carrà’s “Rumore.”
“Rumore” (Italian for “noise,” not rumors, but aren’t rumors really just noise) was a 1974 hit that became one of Carrà’s biggest successes, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. And truly, the hips don’t lie when they’re being summoned by Raffaella.
Christina brings us the infectious, ska-tinged pop of super band General Public’s 1984 single “Tenderness,” a song that marries vulnerability with celebration, and it never fails to fill a dance floor, at least when Christina is holding court.
The handclaps, the bouncy rhythm, the unexpected bassoon (!) — it all comes together to make something irresistible. (Though, those kids at the top of the video are giving Children of the Corn.)
And because we promise you extra fun, get into the groove with Madonna in this Desperately Seeking Susan montage.
“You can dance, for inspiration, come on, I’m waiting…”
