Guilty

We’re done with problematic songs and artists (for now), but we’re not done with discomfort. This week, we dissect the songs that made us feel guilt for loving them when we were young. Can you remember a song that made your younger self feel… a certain kind of way? We’re sure you can.

For Christine, it was Madonna’s “Burning Up” from her 1983 debut self-titled album. Her Catholic upbringing and Madonna’s lusty irreverence (crucifix necklace and all) made for the perfect guilty pleasure song.

For Christina, a misunderstood lyric might have added to the guilt of wanting to understand Romeo Void’s “Never Say Never” from their 1982 album, Benefactor. Somehow “I might like you better if we slept together,” was translated to “we’d molecute better if we slept together,” in young Christina’s brain. Either way, the risqué lyrics, pleading vocalist, and wailing saxophone all added to the taboo.

What songs made you feel that twinge of guilt when you were a child? Feel free to share them with us on the Stereothematica Instagram. And don’t forget to subscribe to get a new episode each week!
