comeback

Sorry, Mr. Cool J. We WILL be calling this a comeback! Or at least… maybe a “come back around.” This week on the podcast, Christina and Christine identify artists who have made a glorious return to the spotlight… even if the path there was painful.

For Christina, she was elated to see one of her favorite musicians from young adulthood, Ben Kweller, make a comeback with his track “Dollar Store,” featuring Waxahatchee. Ben’s journey is one marked with intense sadness, as his 2025 album Cover the Mirrors was created in response to his son Dorian’s tragic death.

Christine’s comeback story comes from the soulful resurgence of Ethiopian legend Girma Bèyènè. After being a successful musician in the late 60s and 70s, Girma left Ethiopia during the Derg military dictatorship to live in the United States, and didn’t make music for almost 40 years. His glorious comeback is detailed in the short documentary My Beautiful Girma and you can hear even more of his story in Ethiopiques: Revolt of the Soul.

In case you were wondering, we DO want your opinion of the best musical comebacks! Please leave your thoughts on this episode’s Instagram post. And remember: not everyone can be Cher. But we can believe in life after love.
