For most of us, going to a concert is a special event. Will there be surprise guests? Will they play your favorite songs, or fresh material that gets you excited for a new album? Will you stand in front of someone who complains about you being too tall? All of this excitement and more is amplified when you see a concert at an iconic venue. This moved Christina to pick this theme–iconic concert at an iconic venue.
Her pick was inspired by a show at the Hollywood Bowl, one of LA’s most iconic music venues, that she attended back in 2023. Brothers Ron and Russell Mael of the band Sparks performed a show of epic proportions for their adoring fans, and Christina’s pick, “When Do I Get to Sing My Way?” from Sparks’ 1994 album “Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins” was all too perfect, considering the Mael brothers were achieving a lifelong dream of playing at the Hollywood Bowl, a venue their mother had taken them to for a Beatles concert back in 1965. They finally got to sing “My Way” (or at least, perhaps, feel like Sid Vicious felt).
(Make sure you watch until 7:45 to see Ron dancing!!!)
Christine’s pick was also from an epic night at the Bowl! Brazilian crooner Seu Jorge wowed her with his rendition of Bowie’s Space Oddity, which was not featured in the Wes Anderson movie “The Life Aquatic” but was indeed a bonus track on the Life Aquatic Studio Sessions featuring Seu Jorge. Christine saw Jorge at the Bowl on June 25, 2017 where he performed with a full orchestra conducted by Thomas Wilkins and arranged by David Campbell (Beck’s dad, for you Beck lovers out there). This rendition was Jorge’s encore and moved our dear Christine to tears.
We love the Bowl SO MUCH that we’ll actually be there in a couple of weeks to see Air perform Moon Safari in its entirety with a full orchestra! See you there?
