“The foulest stench’s in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom…”
Who said these haunting words? Was it Edgar Allen Poe? Mary Shelly? Bram Stoker?
Nah, it’s the Prince of Pop, M.J.! You know, Thriller!!??!!!! Did that tip you off to our theme this week? We dive into the spookiest of the scary and share songs that make our livers quiver (just kidding, real ones know). Since it’s spooky season, let’s not waste time… something evil’s lurking in the dark…
Christine, if you can believe it, picked this theme (as a way to pander to her dear friend and co-host, who loves Halloween), and did not disappoint with her scary song. From South African hip hop duo, Die Antwoord, we get the very freaky “Baby’s on Fire” from their 2012 album Ten$ion (which Pitchfork lovingly rated a 4.2!). From creepy family dynamics to bleached eyebrows and weed pipes that look like guns… this video (and, well, the song) has EVERYTHING!
Christina went back in time to the spooky late 60s with her pick, “Butcher’s Tale (Western Front 1914)” from English rockers the Zombies’ 1968 album “Odessey and Oracle.” The butcher in this song is a soldier fighting in World War I, drawing a parallel to the Vietnam War being waged while the Zombies created this album. His quivering voice and the freaky ass pump organ really drive home the feelings of distress, despair, woe, and utter shock. Scary, right?
Since we’re on the topic… we’ve created a spooky little playlist for you ghouls! Feeling freaky? Cruise on over to the Stereothematica Instagram and recommend some scary songs for us to add! After all, we’re just a few short days from Halloween…
