Made Up Words

Yoooooo! (now you say, YOOOOO!) Ayyyyyy! (now you say, AYYYYYYY!) OH YEAH! See how much fun that is? Even though we stop making sense this week, there’s no mention of David Byrne in this episode. But now there is in the blog post, I suppose. We’re focusing on made up words in songs! What fun to just scat to your heart’s content, no? This tradition goes WAY back, but it’s also pretty popular in pop music. Join us on this fantastic voyage, won’t you?

Christina picked this theme with an excellent song in mind–Ooh Poo Pah Doo by Jessie Hill. A New Orleans legend, his song embodies the joy of call and response, audience participation, and the capability to create a disturbance in your mind through music. Listen on, you’ll get it!

Christine traveled across the pond to France to hear from a controversial figure, Mr. Serge Gainsbourg, sing sweet nothings to his girlfriend’s baby doll in his 1966 song “Shu Ba Du Ba Loo Ba.” Try saying that one 10 times fast…or SLOW! The syllables? Smooth and shallow. The delivery? Smug as can be. It has all the makings of a classic Serge song, and he didn’t even need to make sense to deliver another classic.

In case you came here looking for that disturbing scene Christina was harping on from Twin Peaks… here you go, weirdo.

Since we’re all about community in Stereothematica land, we hope you’ll follow along with us on Instagram where we LOVE when you share your thematic picks for each episode! And there are SO many good choices for this theme, don’t you think?
