Natural beauty can be ephemeral. Take wildflowers, for example. They bloom and often quickly disappear, leaving you wishing it were springtime again. How do you capture that feeling of fleeting beauty? Maybe with a song. And that’s exactly what we attempted this week.
Christina, the native Texan, selected this theme after driving through the Texas Hill Country and seeing the first signs of spring popping up on the side of the road in the form of bluebonnets, the Lone Star State’s signature flower. Luckily, Christine has also visited the venerable Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, so she knows what’s up. The bluebonnet has a chokehold on Texans, but do you know about its mythical origins? Perhaps you can read up on it while you listen to Christina’s soothing choice for this theme: Colours by Hot Chip.
Christine, a native Californian and no stranger to wildflowers herself, made a beautiful selection via an Apple Music Discovery with “Untangtag,” from Swedish quartet Dina Ogon. A vibes-based selection, the song felt to Christine like longing and contradiction. That strange place where beauty and pain coincide. And as Christine said this week, wildflowers are beautiful, but they’re also unruly. They grow where they want. They show up in cracks and along roadsides. They’re delicate, but also resilient. They’re exceptions to expectations.
So, dear listener, please take a page out of the book of wildflowers and grow where you want. Be delicate, and resilient. Exceed expectations (if you feel like it). And take care of yourself, and those around you.
