Cover in Another Language

Ever hear a song and say, “Yeah, this is nice. But what would it sound like in French/Spanish/Greek/Swahili/Urdu?” Well, then, friends, you’re in the right place. This week we take songs that are already good in English and some how get even better in a foreign language. And the best news? No one picked “Yesterday”!

Christine, the polyglot, picked this theme and had an excellent cover to share: LA-based band Freedom Fry’s cover of “Stayin’ Alive.” We ALL know the Bee Gee’s version. Heck, it’s been canonized in the Library of Congress. But Freedom Fry put a delightful new spin on the classic and make us want to listen to it more than the Brothers Gibb ever could have (sorry, Barry).

Christina was ready to go with her pick, too. Remember our problematic friend Morrissey? Well, Basque singer Mikel Erentxun took “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” and created the lovely “Esta luz nunca se apagará.” We don’t even mind that there’s no mention of double decker buses killing anyone. We just like to jam out to his beautiful voice and Spanish accent.
