What started as another theme turned into a real life pity party when Christine and Christina recorded in person for the first time EVER. And we had a rich conversation about one of music’s most self-pitying artists—Harry Nilsson. We hope you join our pity party this week and learn more about Nilsson’s legend status and stick around for some truly despicable imitations.
Christina, a lifelong Nilsson fan, picked this theme after hearing one of his classic hits and laughing at the spectacle of self pity on display. As if “saying goodbye to me” isn’t enough, our buddy pulls a classic—looking at yourself in the mirror and crying. HA! Harry! Have some self respect! Or don’t. The music makes it worth it. Enjoy the self pitying of Harry Nilsson in “I Said Goodbye to Me” from his 1968 album Aerial Ballet.
Christine, ever the freethinker, had a unique Harry song in mind when thinking of the perfect self pitying song: “Gotta Get Up” from his 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson. Curious why this is a self-pitying song? Christina was… until Christine revealed the meaning behind the lyrics: this is a guy lamenting the death of his youth and woefully decrying his adult responsibilities. Makes sense! We heard about your Lost Weekend, Harry…
We had so much fun recording together in person and even more fun seeing Paul Simon together at the Hollywood Bowl! See???

Well, as always, you can cruise on over to our Instagram and leave a comment on this episode’s post to share YOUR favorite self-pitying song! We really wanna know. And if you’re so inclined… why not join Christina’s “Music to Cry To” Spotify playlist?! There are some real sad ones on there!
