Futuristic

The future is now, or maybe a second from now. THE FUTURE is also a vibe, and we’ve got music to match it or maybe set the stage for it. No transhumanistic fantasies here, just some transcendent tunes to cope with the downfall of humanity perpetrated by tech billionaires.

Christine took us to the arid plains of Sudan to learn about Jantra’s blue Yamaha keyboard cranking out futuristic party music for adoring crowds. Jantra’s sound is a part of a tradition of African synth innovation, where imported keyboards are reworked by local musicians until they can handle regional scales and timbres. Pretty futuristic, no? His song “Gedima” should probably be added to our Get Up and Dance playlist because it will make you do just that!

Christina sought out her own Western futuristic concept via Javelin’s “Estevez” from their 2011 album Canyon Candy. The whole album feels, to Christina, like aliens found Western music and movies and took the liberty of putting a funky twist on the genre.

On a serious note: Sudan is experiencing a humanitarian crisis that’s largely going unreported in the mainstream media. If you have the means to make a donation, please join us in giving to Amnesty International. If you don’t have the means, feel free to spread awareness the best way you know how.
