Sports!

Whether you’re being taken out to the ball game or pumping up the jam… or maybe even being wowed by the Skate Circle DJs in Central Park… you can’t deny that sports and music go hand in hand. And this week, we’re revisiting the World Cup music of today and yesteryear and doing a deep dive into the sweet sounds of roller rink tunes to get our blood pumping and give our ears a workout!

Christina selected this theme in honor of the World Cup 2026! But she took it back to 2010 when the world was graced with “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” by Shakira and South African band Freshlyground. Why is the song so good? It has the band Golden Sounds (aka Zangalewa) to thank for their original tune, Zangalewa. Controversial or not, it’s a jam, as is the original!

Christine, clever as she is, asked GOOGLE if rollerskating is actually a sport. And the Google gods blessed her with a “yes.” As such, her SPORTS song selection is “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays'” by De La Soul. Just take a quick moment to put this one on. This song has eight samples, Q-Tip making us laugh, an INCREDIBLE music video, and all the right moves for you to slay on the roller rink (or the Central Park Skate Circle). Don’t forget–you have to go on Saturday! Saturday? Saturday. It’s on Saturday.

Even if you think music and sports don’t mix… please. Open your heart and your ears this week. And if we change your mind… maybe share this podcast episode with a friend? And if you KNOW that sports and music are a match made in heaven, why not jog over to the Stereothematica Instagram to share your fav sports song? We LOVE to hear your picks.

See ya on the pitch!
