Sometimes we learn about songs in ways we can’t explain easily. A failed Shazam of a song at a restaurant, a captivating tune on a cool girl’s hair-do how-to video. You catch my drift. This week we’re exploring the sometimes convoluted ways we discover songs (and know that these AREN’T songs from any old Spotify Discover Weekly/Apple Discovery Station!).
Christine came up with this idea after a particularly funny song discovery. While searching for the perfect curly shag in 2019, she discovered “A Go Go” by Dara Puspita, an impossibly cool all-female rock group from Surabaya, Indonesia, formed in 1964. The song was playing in the background of a video demonstrating how to style a curly shag and launched a new love for Dara Puspita and a certain LA-based hairstylist.
Christina had a convoluted story of her own. While dining with friends she thought she heard a steelpan cover of Montell Jordan’s “Get It On Tonite,” but in reality it was Bacao Rhythm and Steel covering Claudja Barry’s “Love for the Sake of Love.” Twists and turns ensue!
