I Didn’t Know That Was…

“Not knowing is the most intimate.” We might not be Buddhists, but we can definitely get behind this logic. Join us as we lay bare our ignorance and learn some really cool stuff along the way (to enlightenment???).

Christina picked this theme as a loud testament to the fact that she indeed doesn’t know everything about music. Or even that much. Not even that Bob Dylan was the writer of one of her much-loved songs, “If You Gotta Go,” which she knows best by the Flying Burrito Brothers. Bob, no stranger to Stereothematica listeners, wrote the song in ‘64 and released it as a single in 67. But some time after 2010 Christina discovered her guy Gram Parsons singin’ it with the Burrito Bros and got hooked. Bob? He did just fine. And we loved the multiple blogs about this song over at Untold Dylan. Check ’em out!

Christine’s didn’t know moment was when she discovered that Minnie Riperton was Maya Rudolph’s mother. Thanks to the Questlove Supreme Classic podcast, she learned that fellow Banana Slug Maya is part of musical royalty. Listen closely to the end of her pick, you might hear Riperton singing “Maya, Maya, Maya,” in the outro.

As always, we’d love it if you’d play along! Drop the musical knowledge you also didn’t know in the comments of this episode’s Instagram post. And maybe tell a friend who…. doesn’t know about us? We’d love to welcome them into the fold.
