The Seattle sound. Flannel shirts. Rejecting conformity. Embracing dirty hair. What is “grunge”? Join us this week as we dive into a couple of grunge songs (and make some interesting connections to musical influence on the grunge scene).
Christina picked this theme with an appreciation of the musical genre that defined a generation. Not her generation, per se, but one she was exposed to thanks to college radio nonetheless. As a celebrator of young talent, she picked Silverchair’s “Tomorrow” from their 1995 album Frogstomp as this clever group of teens were only 15 when they recorded their album! What a feat. Who knew grunge music might inspire you to work hard and achieve your dreams?
Christine surprised no one when she selected a Devo song for her pick. OK, it was a Devo song being covered by Nirvana. STILL. She isn’t one to break character. But kudos to her for picking an excellent cover of Devo’s Turn Around done by Nirvana for the BBC John Peel session in 1990. Grunge song? Maybe. Great performance? Absolutely. And hey… Kurt really was ahead of his time. He knew that you could sign to a major label and still reject conformity… because he saw the Devo masterminds do it before he did.
We’re usually pretty funny on Instagram if you care to give us a follow and leave a comment about your favorite grunge song! And check out our playlists for all the amazing tunes you hear on the show (and then some!).
