Hometown Sound

Sometimes the sounds of your hometown can move you to tears… and sometimes they can make you want to move your body… and if you’re moving away from your hometown, you just might want to get sentimental and gush about what makes your hometown sound unique. Join us as we dive into the sounds of Houston, Texas, and Huntington Beach, California, this week!

Christina picked this theme as a love letter to Houston, TX, and the unique sound of Third Ward, the Southside, and more. While there are so many genres of music that Houston claims (and celebrates), this week we’re focused on the unique sounds of the Screwed Up Click, Houston’s much-loved rap crew who bangs screw. Confused? Don’t be! Just tune in and groove out.

Christine’s hometown is perhaps as mysterious as she is, but for the theme she settled on Huntington Beach, home to The Offspring, Reel Big Fish, The Aquabats, and most importantly, The Vandals! Fun fact: Christine was once in a wedding with Joe Escalante, the bassist/songwriter, and the longest serving member of the band. And she was only 12. Pretty cool! Check out their video for their epic cover of “Don’t Stop Me Now,” by Queen, with a very HB punk twist!

As always, we love listener participation! Cruise over to our Instagram page where you can leave a comment with your hometown hero band/singer/surprise and weigh in on the ska/punk cover issue. It is up for debate, after all!!!
