Ever hear a song and think, “this would have been better as an instrumental,” or perhaps even, “why… did you sing it… that way!?” This week we’re exploring the concept of saying less by sharing a lot. But really, we’re just sharing songs we like where we weren’t fans of the vocals (at first!).
Christine selected this theme with a song in mind, Yes’s “Heart of the Sunrise” from their 1971 album Fragile. Not a Yes fan at first, Christine willed herself to listen to as much Yes as possible and it turns out she’s no longer a Yes naysayer. Let that one marinade. But seriously, she proved that if you just spend enough time exposing yourself to music you think you don’t like, you might change your mind. And then you’ll want to say more!
Christina picked a band she wasn’t a big fan of but who had what sounded like a promising song. Theatrical piano, intensity, anticipation, and then… Bob Geldof’s weird voice. Huh? He just sings like that, it turns out. If you’re unfamiliar with The Boomtown Rats’s “I Don’t Like Mondays,” maybe you’re more familiar with the tragic shooting the song’s based on?
